New Class for Cheeky: Beginner Foundation Skills for Competition Dog Sports

During the holiday, Cheeky has been more focused on playing with Sizzle and Trü and the other dogs and not so much on training, but she is signed up for a new class at RDOC and I'm very excited about getting her started in foundations for competition sports.  Here's a description of the class:

"Positive training is far more than replacing a correction with a cookie! This class will teach you the principles of +R training, and using those principles, teach you how to train the foundation behaviors for dog sports. We will prioritize the dog's emotional state, building behaviors in a relaxed and confident dog. Motivation and engagement are by-products of this type of training, and we will develop motivation and engagement as we train. This is not a 'traditional' obedience class, but rather a mentorship; our primary goal is to teach you how to apply +R methods to a variety of skills, which, at this stage, look nothing like the skill you will have in the ring. If you are tired of luring your dog, or unable to fade your food or prompts, you may find this class a different and helpful way to approach training."

I can't wait to get started.  Cheeky's tracking instructor is also teaching this class.  I know we can learn a lot from her so I can't wait.  The class starts January 11th.  More soon.

Cheeky's First Blog Post

C heeky is a tenacious Welsh Springer Spaniel puppy and she lives near Richmond, VA with her human, Crystal and her dog mom, Fanny as well as her half-sister, Trü, her aunt Poppy, cousin, Sizzle and Grandma Jasmine.  So far she has been learning tricks and a bit of obedience.  She knows: sit down stand (this one will be important as she will be a show dog) shake high five touch up paws up go to your bed rollover Cheeky just started tracking classes.  She has had two swimming lessons and two barn hunt lessons.  Her mom has also let her do some scent work for fun with treats.  That was really fun because she loves to chew up cardboard.   Cheeky is teething right now and still working on not chewing people.  Stay tuned for more of her training fun.
